POSH came from sailing
Port Out Starboard Home.
It was how the Upper Classes travelled because it meant they got to see the sunset each evening from their cabin window.

More likely from slang posh "a dandy" (1890), from thieves' slang meaning "money" (1830), originally "coin of small value, halfpenny," possibly from Romany posh "half."

19th century thieves' slang has a lot to answer for, actually, they just made up a bunch of words from scratch to avoid being understood.

LIES!
It so the uppers had shade.. port out meant the starboard side was south, and as they were above the equator (just) it was much hotter than on port, and vice versa.
