because my instinctive reaction to compulsory voting is that uninformed twats (as a whole) would decide the vote

On one hand, politicians don't just pander to old people or special interest groups "because they're the only ones that vote", but on the other hand it turns into a bit of a popularity contest sometimes.

Make it compulsory with a none of the above option.
When the politicians see a majority of people don't want any of them it might make them sit up and take stock of what they are doing.
