I've been making lots of 8-bit versions of characters from slightly nerdy things like Red Dwarf, Twin Peaks and Metal Gear Solid.

The haircuts are often the hardest bit to get right.

Make a pic with just a few pixels, zoom right in and use the pencil tool.
Paint is good for it too, but lacks the alpha
