I went to Chernobyl. It was freaky
I made this!
I enjoy going on holiday to places that are, well, a bit off the beaten track. So I thought, if I can survive Best Korea, then I can easily survive Chernobyl and Pripyat.
Creepiest bit was definitely the abandoned schools. Half-done school work strewn about the place and toys just left there.
Oh, and Kiev is freaking amazing. Love that city. Very cheap too, and of course not many other tourists (although there's no reason to avoid it at all - it's just as safe as any other European capital).

You'll be fine, just don't have any child bearing shags in the next six months.

Got a bigger radiation dose on the flight to Kiev than in the exclusion zone
And anyway, the whole child bearing shag thing really isn't going to happen.

By the way, you were probably getting readings in millisieverts, whereas we were firmly in the microsievert range.

I was using the widest angle lens I could afford. Still couldn't even get half of it in.
To give you an idea of the scale, make the Eiffel Tower about 50% taller, then knock it over.
When the wind blows past the antenna, it makes a sound a bit like an aeroplane passing by in the distance.

Amazing thing. There's a YouTube video of someone climbing it - it really is massive!

re my comment about the plane noises: standing in Pripyat I realised that something was missing - sound. You're right in the middle of a town, and you hear no talking, no footsteps, no cars, no planes overhead.
Just the wind and the occasional sounds of your fellow tourists.

There's a page 2.
Here's the tower. My mates at the bottom of the pic aren't exactly tiny either

Those cats appear perfectly normal...
I can only assume that their mutations chose to manifest themselves as psychic powers then?

Not at all.
The cats are wonderful. Everything is normal.
They are DEFINITELY not here to take over the world with their psychic powers.
Return to your duties, human.

Not this time
But I did about 6 years ago last time I went to Kiev. I wanted to go to Chernobyl that time but my co-travellers weren't interested.

Lucky Bastard
I went to Ukraine last month but my wife wouldn't let me go to Pripyat. I even took my big camera with me just in case she changed her mind.
Mind you she had to live through it so I can understand why the locals think this tourism is a bit strange.
Rather than admit the problem and distribute Potassium Iodate to save their health the bastard government lied, and then countered rumours and radiation readings with a story about the Dutch having a nuclear accident. My missus was shipped to Kiev for the May Day parade as a Komsomol school kid and says there was a strange yellow rain falling on them.
I thought Kiev was really expensive - in Lviv we went out for a slap up meal at the best place in town (foi gras for my main thank you), with wine, and then on to the opera with the best seats in the hose, all for £35 for two.
