I suppose what I'm getting at is that just casting a black actor in a traditionally white role and calling it diversity feels a bit low-effort. Surely if the producers want to support diversity and black culture, a better way is to bring traditional black folklore to a wider audience. Why isn't Disney focusing on creating new, culturally and racially diverse characters instead? Too much risk? Moana did pretty well, as did Mulan.

The Little Mermaid isn't the most pertinent example.
As others have mentioned, she's basically a fish and I'm not entirely sure that she's ever been specifically described as being one colour or another. I mean her roots are in Danish folklore, so there's a pretty good chance that HKA was imagining a white upper-half, but it's largely irrelevant.
Snow White's casting is slightly more problematic, since the character is explicitly described as having particularly fair skin, which leads me to believe that the casting in that particular instance is either the result of shoddy research or deliberate wokeism. Considering the decision to erase the Dwarves, I'm going to go with wokeism.
I wonder how they'll handle the lack of consent in the kiss scene...

Children are not likely to be upset as some adults are by black actors in "traditionally white roles". Anyway, in the future you will be able to choose the actors' skin colour on Disney+

Yeah, I mean at the end of the day it's nothing more serious than a poor casting choice.
I couldn't really give a fuck who plays Snow White. I certainly don't give a fuck that there are now black elves in Middle Earth (The Rings of Power has much, much bigger problems) and likewise, I'm not losing any sleep over Steve Toussaint playing Corlys in House of the Dragon. I can imagine some of the folk who actually read the books beforehand being a bit confused by the casting choices in both situations, but Elven/Velaryon skin tone is hardly a pivotal plot device.
The issue I take with all of this is probably just related to my inherent cynicism. I don't believe for a second that Disney are casting people of colour for 'traditionally' white roles for any other reason than some cheap publicity and some wokeist virtue signaling/box ticking.
Being able to change the race of the lead actors on the fly would make for an interesting study, mind. I wonder what percentage of viewers would choose a Hispanic Snow White or a Black Ariel over their traditionally White counterparts should they be given the option?
