Yes, its a german expression and dates back to the first world war, where 08/15 was the model number of a common machine gun (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/MG_08) in the german army.

the books are very good
shame they avoided them for series 2, and i have no idea how they can do series 3. new book is out early next year, cant wait!
