the romans had a sure fire way of stopping people picking there noses , which at the time was considerd as a barbaric and uncivilized endevour to let the voices in your head escape and thus infect other peoples minds with what ever evil spirit or god or deity had possed you in the first place.
The punsihment for public nose mining was a swift and public humiliation of the person caught doing the act of nose picking here too referd to in the Roman form of JC , the simple addition of two pieces of wood and three nails would form the crux of the punishment to the nose picker

In evolutionary terms, if it's detrimental to health, then why are your nostrils the perfect size to accept a finger?
Your ears are specifically two small for you to be able to poke a finger in there.
