Willenium tugs our sleeve and says: Tell us why the past was a bit shit. You may wish to use witty anecdotes reflecting your own personal experience.

It's not actually that good.
Carrie Fisher is average-looking.
Darth Vader isn't that cool.

Good job Jar-Jar gave some much-needed depth and finesse to what would otherwise have been a tired, formulaic saga, isn't it?

But even a die hard Star Wars geek knows this + George Lucas couldn't write decent dialogue if his life depended on it. The plot is paper thin and really stupid and Luke is an annoying cunt BUT to a 7 year old boy it was the most fantastic thing ever.
I held a certain amount of nostalgic love for the original films but I didn't own a replica lightsaber or go to conventions or own every incarnation of the film ever churned out by Lucas film but because of that amazing day in 1977 when I was 7 I loved them.
With the new batch of films Lucas' faults were magnified 1000 fold and when I have re-watched the originals with my daughter they looked almost as bad as the new batch...the cunt
And like a dog returning to in's own vomit it'll be queuing to see what JJ Whatshisface will make of episode 7*
*too much fucking lens flare probobly

probably because other directors are involved for 2 thirds of it.
Also, Ewoks defeating a legion of the Emperor's finest troops, is awesome.

but the new films have made me see the flaws that I didn't see before.
Mind you Luke in the 1st one was an insufferable whiny cunt most of the way through... even when I was a kid...I wanted to be Han
The Ewoks!?...now you're being silly ;)

just like his dad was a whiny little cunt in all the prequels
i surmise that lucas was a whiny little cunt as a kid and the entire franchise is therapy for all the bullying he received as a whiny little cunt kid
the whiny little cunt

One of the rules picked out of the hat was that I had to "Drink every time Luke whines". I was wasted before Empire even began.

has approached the film with entirely the wrong mindset. Even Phantom Menace is almost enjoyable if you look at it through the eyes of a child (except it's really fucking boring, as are the other prequels).

Any film that's going to be about space taxes and senate meetings that's still targeted at children (mainly) needs to seriously look at itself in the mirror (metaphorically and physically) and admit it's got the basics wrong.

There are 3 reactions to Star Wars. These all happen in varying degrees, so for 'love it' also add 'like it', etc.
1. Love it. I'm in this category, grew up with it, happy to watch all 6 films, don't care about weak storylines / writing, it's a film full of characters I know very well.
2. Hate it. Saw one or two of them, didn't connect, think it's all overhyped crap. Fair enough, I think everything Bob Dylan ever did was shit, but clearly I'm missing something a lot of other people aren't.
3. People from group 2 or who have never seen any of them, complaining about people from group 1.
Why do these people exist?

Normal people who have seen and enjoyed the films to a greater or lesser extent and then happily got on with the rest of their lives and enjoyed many other films without feeling the need to talk about them all the fucking time.

People who loved it when they were young, then grew up and hated it when they were older because it wasn't made for their age range.

Having added the caveat about these covering ranges of reactions. Let's whittle mine down a little;
1. Love, like or at least do not dislike.
2. Do not like, may or may not have seen them.
3. Would belong in group 2 if not for the fact they need to have a go at group 1, or the films themselves.
I do agree though, probably the majority of people are indifferent.

Groups 1 and 2 are pretty much irrelevant anyway. The question is, why do people care if you like Star Wars, when they are either not interested or don't like the films themselves.
This is common - music produces similar nosepoking, but Star Wars seems particularly controversial.

An ex girlfriend worked in PR and had the job of picking up Carrie Fisher from her London hotel to make sure she got to some Star Wars party that was being held at Ally Pally.
She turns up at Carrie's suite but no matter how hard she knocks there's no reply. She gets the hotel staff to let her into the room only to find Princess Leia naked, hunched on the floor making moaning noises. Pissed as a fart.
Cold showers and coffee were employed to get her sufficiently mobile to make a fleeting appearance at the event.
