Best thing ever eaten
Was a ten course meal bought for me by my host when I went out for a conference in Japan. I ate every last mouthful and it was all fantastic. We all had a private room, afterwards I asked my translater/guide if this was a traditional Japanese meal and was told "No this is were the VIPs go to eat" which made me feel 100 feet tall driving a massive honda accord. A picture of every course in replies! Have a look!

Yummmm
1st Course - Don't know what it was! There was a hunk of meat and the little orange balls that I thought were berries were actually fish eggs.

2nd Course - Soup

3rd Course - Some sort of meat fish and tofu

4th Course - Some sort of Japanese radish and tofu

5th Course - Unidentified fish, was told it was a kind of trout and pickle

6th Course - Scallops and seaweed

7th Course - TEMPURA!

8th Course - Some sort of custard with fish underneath

9th Course - After all that we only now get some rice! Served with pickles

10th Course - Melon, I don't like melon but this stuff was devine.

That multicoloured thing in the fourth course looks like the chewing gum from Willy Wonka...
that Violet Beauregarde eats

I'm amazed that despite the amazing array of foodstuffs
you thought about Willy Wonka....

Looks like an everlasting gobstopper.
rather than the blueberry chewing gum.

I've just eaten
a fried bacon and black pudding sandwich followed by a half-pint of angel delight and those photos look so appetizing I'm getting hungry again! Have a click for what looks like a superb meal :o)

LOL
you do realise that they only kept serving you food because you didn't leave anything (It's a cultural thing). Only fat bastards ever get as far as a final rice course. Rice is traditionally only used to fill you up if you are still hungry. That's why it's usually served at the end in Chinese and Japanese Resturants. It's not a good idea to order rice at the best resturants - makes you look poor.

I think they were just taking the piss with the melon. The Jap's are like that ;-)

Wrong!
The Japanese are offended if you don't eat every last grain of rice. The food was a set 10 course meal and all 18 of us had the same. So ner ner ner nerner. There were loads of food and drink rules I had to learn, they're quite picky. In China however if you finish the plate you are basically telling them they are stingy and the meal was meagre.

lovely..
Thanks for posting the pics, I live in a cosmopolitan city, yet there's very little genuine Japanese tucker to be had.
Also loving this question, there's a lot of gourmands here.. :-)
