i was being bullied by this jerkoff with a big dog,which he painted with some kind of glowy crap and tried to scare the shit out of me.Aha!,thought I,and I called in a detective and this short fat guy who was always writing.Turns out the bully was a retard,as he fucked off pretty sharpish and accidentally drowned in a bog.Result!

1) if youre paying attention,you know by chapter 3 that it's stapleton - it's meant to be evocative and spooky rather than a plain mystery.
2) Watson is undoubtedly the main character.

But it's not so easy to work out what the servants are up to and where they fit in.
Personally, I always liked it more than the other longer stories. You see the whole plot as it unfolds rather than in flashbacks and stories.

and frankly,its the only story to contain a degree of menace.in the other novels and short stories, holmes is some kind of superhero.in HOTB he's more human and fallible.And I like that.
