I don't see the problem.
Sure, you could say "Tomato" when asked which sauce, but when the other answer is "brown"* the shorter "red" is correct, succinct and conveys the necessary meaning.

*as mentioned this can be HP, Daddie's, Chop, steak, or any other name for very similar sauces.
