Tinning is a process
where one coats the base metal with tin, usually using a molten tin bath.
Cans are (or used to be, often aluminium is used now) made from tin plated steel. The plated steel was know as tin plate and shortened to "tin" This "tin" was used to form "tin cans".Most modern steel cans use a diferent type of corrosion protection, I think that this is because of health issues with the tin.
So it is actually "canned". The product goes in a can made of tin plated steel.
