This is a question Cars

"Here in my car", said 80s pop hero Gary Numan, "I feel safest of all". He obviously never shared the same stretch of road as me, then. Automotive tales of mirth and woe, please.

Who here
does a steady 29mph (in a 30 zone) when they're being tailgated?

Not I.
I drop down to 25 or lower until the cunt behind me gets the message and backs off, then I'll go back up to 30. If he (usually a he; birds don't seem to tailgate for some reason) tries it again, then the process repeats.

This.
Or 55 in a 70. If you listen closely, sometimes you can hear their arteries burst.

Absolutely this!

(, Thu 29 Apr 2010, 8:28, closed)
yes, this

(, Thu 29 Apr 2010, 9:20, closed)
this!
If I'm being tailgated as I approach a village, I tend to slow down to the 30mph very gradually, instead of slamming on the brakes. Then at the other end, I wait until we're actually out of the 30mph zone before speeding up.

I hate tailgaters, worst of all the road-gits.

I'm more aggressive than that.
I hit the brakes. In the US if they hit you, it's their fault and their insurance company will pay for your repairs.

(Mind you I only do this at slower speeds and don't come to a stop, just drop about 10 mph.)

Usually this will result in their cell phone flying in one direction while their latte goes in the other as they suddenly pay very close attention to the road.

I believe that's the case in the UK too.
If you run into the back of someone, then you were too close to stop when they did.

I get this
30 milimt that goes into a 50, double white lines and a blind bend so you really shouldn't overtake. Plod often park up near there, plus people live in the 30 bit so it seems a bit rude to speed. Usually get some bell end inches from my arse. Often they'll try and overtake going into the 50 bit, even though you can't see whats coming. They usually don't bother indicating either.
Thing is, I'm on a motorbike. By the time I hit 50 they're several car lengths behind. I'm just waiting for a lorry coming the other way.

I like to
slam the brake on with my left foot at the same time as flooring it with my right, the look on their faces as the nose tips down is priceless

With most modern cars
the brake will override the accelerator, so you will not get any power.

Takes away all the fun!

Drop it into third, or second if needed,
and just dump the clutch.
Or one my mum taught me, pull away till they can see your rear lights, as they speed up to prevent the ingress of any fag papers, flick your side lights on. They automatically think they're brake lights and pull back!

I find it's fun...
...to wait until they're looking the other way (as they often do when tailgating you) then lightly rest my foot on the brake.

When they look back they have they panic and slam their brakes on, as I toddle off.

The worst thing about tailgating I find is that it's often when there's a long line of cars, so they couldn't get any further ahead if I pulled over and waved them past!

In the distant past
One of my mates had a Ford Corsair 2000E which he lovingly rebuilt to concourse.
However it had one additional feature: a little switch connected to the brake lights which he used to toggle when being tailgated.
All of the pantwetting without him having to slow from 30.

yes, always

Yes, this.
Also find it a useful time to test my rear foglights. You never know when you are going to need them, and if cunty-chops being makes the "AAAAGH-FUCK" face and slows down, you know they are working.
