I practiced it as a kid...
and still believe to this day, that running up the stairs using your hands AND feet is the quickest (and arguably most stylish) manner of getting upstairs.

100% in agreement.
However, for descending stairs, this method is not quite as efficient or stylish and attempting to race your dog will result in disaster and pain and possibly being bitten on your clumsy hand.

Also, lying on your stomach and sliding down the stairs or 'doing the crocodile' is a quick way to descend.
It has the added benefit of getting you a thrashing off Mum for loosening the stair carpet.
