This is a question I don't understand the attraction

Smaug says: Ricky Gervais. Lesbian pr0n. Going into a crowded bar, purely because it's crowded. All these things seem to be popular with everybody else, but I just can't work out why. What leaves you cold just as much as it turns everyone else on?

To develop Voodoo-Child16's post earlier
I don't get why people feel the need to bash Microsoft.

I have no gripes with IE (it does the job and doesn't necessitate an extra download).

Windows Media Player (does the job, plays the mp3s and doesn't feel the need to take over my computer like Quicktime or RealPlayer does)
I took advantage of The Ultimate Steal offer and now use Office 2k7. I've been using Office since v4.3, and it does what I want. There is Open Office which apparently is just as good, but not to me it wasn't.

I use Visual Studio and SQL Server. They let me accomplish what I want to do. I have no intention of learning MySQL or fucking Perl either.

The worst offenders are those that will cry "I hate Microsoft and I won't use any of their shit software" but then still use Windows.

Then there's Linux. Yes, I've tried various distros of Linux several times. Suse 6.3 was the first many years ago. I've tried Debian, Red Hat and a couple of weeks ago, I even downloaded the all singing all dancing Ubuntu. And do you know what? It was counter-productive. I didn't get anything done because I didn't know what I needed to do to achieve what I wanted.
"Well, what's the difference? You had to learn how to use Windows didn't you?." Yes I'll admit that I did, but I know how to use it now and there's no justification in setting myself back 15 years to learn a new system.
"Oh, you didn't give it chance". I don't want to have to learn a new OS, and dick about with config files, and look on forums to see why my printer no longer works.

Along with Visual Studio, I use Corel Draw and some Adobe products. "Oh, but you can run them under WINE"
"WHAT'S THE FUCKING POINT???" That's like instead of saying what you're thinking, you write it down first and then read it out loud. If you want to use Linux, then good for you. But don't bore me about how much better than Windows you think it is, and most certainly don't try to convert me because I couldn't care less.

and the same goes for Mac users, you smug cunts.

Edit: Can I just make myself clear? I'm not saying any particular system is better than any other, but it's the need to prattle on about it like a sanctimonious twat that I don't see the point of.

'I don't get why people feel the need to bash Microsoft.' but you're going to beat on all Mac users? Nah, I'm getting bored with replying politely to these. I'm a Mac user - suck my dick you dull ignorant shit stirring cunt, take a hike and suck Bill Gates dick!!!

^ arf!
I think you kinda missed the point. As a Mac user, are you constanty boring people about how much better it is than Windows, or do you keep it to yourself and get on with the business of using it?

Oh and, "suck my dick you dull ignorant shit stirring cunt, take a hike and suck Bill Gates dick".

make up your mind.

They're just computers...
...use a crap one if you like, nobody really cares.

this is exactly his point
"use a crap one if you like" it makes fuck all difference to most users what they use. I've got Vista at home on a cheap as shit PC. It works a treat for the things that I want to do so why would I want to waste my time installing another operating system, or pay a fuck load of money for a Mac that will do exactly the same stuff?

oh thank fuck..
that someone gets it.
you're right - windows has some issues, the fact that the way i work is to a degree determined by someone i've not met, in seattle or palo alto or somewhere, is a little irritating. But not, to be honest, as irritating as people that talk AT me about fucking linux, and how wondrously flexible it is. I'm sure it is, but i really don't have time to sit down and write my own OS. I don't care about it's threading capabilities, i've zero interest in different iterations of it, or it's genesis, or it's uses. And, as with any group of evanglicals, the converted can get quite pissy about any contradiction to their view, which seems to be seen as heresy. I had a colleague drone on about how i should love linux as the movie i'd watched on the plane that day (he might have thought it through and realised that i'm not at my most charming after 13 hours on a plane, but no...) was almost certainly streamed using linux, and therefore i should be grateful.. I'm ashamed to say the whole hotel bar looked at me as i screamed "fuck off you window licking twat"
ooh, that was almost cathartic. Thanks for listening.

To paraphrase Wil Wheaton
Diehard Windows fans and Mac zealots are equally annoying. It's just a computer, people. Get over it.

Linux, eh?
... well, of course you didn't get on with it. You didn't try to install and use Slackware :-). Or what's that one where you have to compile everything yourself from scratch?
(, Thu 22 Oct 2009, 11:38, closed)
Gentoo.
"I fancy trying this app. It'll be interesting to see what it's like tomorrow, when it's done compiling."

It's simple really:
People in the know know that Microsoft have set back the computing world by 5 to 10 years by peddling their half-arsed crap and pretending it's finished.
There is also that fact that Microsoft broke the law in order to prevent manufacturers selling computers with anything but Windows on it -- thus preventing real competition and true innovation.
Then there is the tendency of Microsoft to buy companies with cool products and turning out butchered and less impressive versions of their software (a recent one being Photosynth).
Then there are the HTML and other standards that Microsoft deliberately didn't follow -- making writing web pages supported by all browsers a nightmare. This is also a contributory factor in Flash becoming a de-facto standard for web video -- had MS got behind a real open standard we wouldn't need to install the bug-addled flash plugin to watch youtube and other sites.
I could go on but I won't.
