This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

People who use the word 'cunt' in every sentence
It's a dirty word when it's spoken, really horrible.

And is it just me or do people with Scouse and Wolverhampton accents sound common, even if they're not?

add a 'y' on the end
and it becomes one of the funniest words. I find even girls find it amusing, but that says more about the girls i know more than anything...

I find
scousers tend to make every statement sound like an invitation to a fight.

Before anyone gets annoyed, I'm not saying they are actually trying to fight me, it's just the way the accent comes across.

the scouse accent
does, unfortunately, sound common. programmes like brookside and hollyoaks have done nothing to help in this matter.

No,
they just sound thick.

yampy
i grew up in wolvo and after a few jars of ale my accent thickens somewhat. Seems that asking 'am yam or-right' sounds quite common. To be honest common seems to equal unfamiliar in most stories here... Anyone who can understand cockney rhyming slang has real language skills.
