This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Relative
Further to my definition post, it all seems a bit relatvie.

Common could refer to people who have a low expectation of what is classed as posh.

Posh is having a driveway that you can get into 4th gear when driving to your house.

When I was about 8, I was round at a friend's house, and his dad was listening to The Brandenburg Concerto. I thought it was good, so he copied it onto a cassette and let me borrow it.

I put it on at home declared that I liked it. Two of my brothers asked me

"why are you listening to that crap for? You're not posh."

my mum turned it off and put the telly on instead.

Listening to classical music is not posh.

Nor is watching BBC4 or reading the The Guardian/Independent.

Yep,
Even though I have a love of Rock & Heavy Metal (and all of its sub-genres), I love classical music.

I don't rate the operatic stuff that much though.

I think what you appreciate about it, is the fact that it's played by tanlented musicians, unlike the awful atonal drivel that is modern day "popular music" (sic).

Back in the Day
This happened back at the turn of the 80s, with the New Romantics.

My mate
is a big, tattooed. long haired scary looking metaller. Pierced face, big scary dog, the works.

I spent an odd evening in his house about five years ago, drunk out our minds listening to classical music. Mozart, Bach, the works! It was ACE!

We both had a quiet cry at "Adagio for strings" by Samuel Barber.

Adagio for Strings
It's a brilliant piece of work. Gets me every. Single. Time.

Listening to classical music
is only posh if you use your own orchestra to play it.

Absolutely
I'd describe 'common' as a state of mind, rather than financial/material wealth. It's a lack of intellectual curiousity

it's all about personal taste
i love rock, i love queen, but i also love Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain", especially during a thunderstorm.
