This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Houses
Where the occupants have painted the house number on the wall next to the door.

It's acceptable to do that on your wheelie-bin so you know which one's yours when the dustman leaves it 100yds up the street with a dozen others.

But on the outside of the house?

Where I live
not having your numbers on the house is against the law. Not that anyone obeys it anyhow.

Nor are you allowed to have a mail box next to your house. Nooooo, it has to be out by the street where the passing yobs can play whack-the-mailbox-with-a-sledgehammer going about 60000 per hour in their Chevy. grrrr.

mailboxes
Why can't the mailman just push the mail through a hole in the door like they do here?

That guy gets paid to deliver the letters, yet you're the one that has to walk from your door to the street to get the damn things. In the rain. In your slippers and dressing-gown first thing in the morning.

Unless he's like our postman who I think rolls a die to see if he's going to deliver any letters during the next 30 mins.

to be honest
when i used to work for the electricity board half my life was spent looking for houses . The numbering of houses in the UK is not allways logical. Its quite a sensible thing to have your house number prominatly displayed . You may know where you live but how am i meant to find your house among 200 identical ones ESP?

You've never driven up a road on a rainy night trying in vain to find the house you're looking for, then?

I'm with you MM
houses should always have their number clearly displayed, but just not in white emulsion.
