This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Rod Hull and Emu
The programs we weren't allowed to watch had less to do with which ones were common, but more to do with what my mother enjoyed watching. So the list was baffling.

Yes to:
Grange Hill;
Eastenders;
The Twilight Zone;
Crimewatch;
Marmalade Atkins;
Anything with Floella Benjamin

No to:
Rod Hull and Emu (pink windmill edition);
Tizwaz;
Mini pops;
Wizbit;
Paul Daniels magic show;
Anything with Christopher Biggins in.

Paul Daniels and the lovely Debbie?
Common as muck.

I can prove it. Write a letter to your local paper (or convince a journo friend to write an article) slagging off either of them and their marriage.

They respond to defend themselves every. single. time, no matter how obscure the publication.

Have any of you ever heard of the Andersonstown News? Paul and Debbie have, and they'd like to set the record straight.

Also, Wizbit was a cunt.

Yes to Grange Hill?
Rough children being disrespectful to teachers? It was a programme greatly frowned upon by my (teacher) mother. I was allowed to watch it under sufference only, and then probably only because it was on the BBC. If it had been on ITV it would have been strictly verboten, obviously.

Fuck me!
I forgot about Marmalade Atkins - I fancied the arse off her!

Edit - Just googled and found she died in 2001. Oh well, baqck to Salma Hayek then.

'Pink windmill'
always sounded vaguely suggestive to me.
