This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

People Who Try To Look Posh

so would it not be better to say
Never use a Brobdingnagian word where a small one would suffice
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 7:29, closed)
surely
that should be

"Never use a Brobdingnagian word where a Blefuscan would suffice"

?

Wrong again
it's

'Never use a Brobdingnagian word where a Liliputian would suffice.'

The same applies in work situations
when writing letters.

I have worked in insurance for a few years and the number of people I know who try to sound "professional" by writing like a 1950's politician, boggles my mind.

Say, for example, a customer sends us something in the post. I'd send a letter back that would probably start:

"Dear Mr Kebabs, Thank you for your letter dated 18th October....."

Whereas some of my "intelligent" colleagues would write something like:

"Dear Sirs, Further to your correspondence of 18/10/08 we write to confirm safe receipt of the above...."

1. No one talks like that any more
2. No member of the public enjoys reading shit like that
3. It doesn't make you "posh" you orange faced slag.
