This is a question Corporate Idiocy

Comedian Al Murray recounts a run-in with industrial-scale stupidity: "Car insurance company rang, without having sent me a renewal letter, asking for money. Made them answer security questions." In the same vein, tell us your stories about pointless paperwork and corporate quarter-wits

Related to themanwithaplan's story down there V V RE phone insurance
I had T-Mobile phone cover and lost my phone, or was stolen or whatever, I no longer had it. Checked the insurance small print and saw this
"Theft from a public place, public conveyance, any property or premises or a motor vehicle is not covered unless the is evidence of a break in"
Correct me If I'm wrong but does that not cover their arses for ANY place the public could be? And me being a member of the public means I then couldnt go anywhere I am allowed if I have my phone? And you are only covered on a public train if someone has broken into/onto the train? I had to check to see if it had been changed now but no, it is still there: www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-phones/phone-insurance/cost/ (down the bottom, open the .PDF) so word of warning to anyone with fonesafe/T-mobile insurance. You arent covered for theft anywhere unless you are burgled in your own car.

Actual cunts
I don’t know why I bother to continue insuring my phone, on every occasion (well, 3 so far) that I’ve attempted to make a claim they’ve managed to worm their way out of it somehow.

Just to give the opposite view,
O2 insurance were great when I lost my phone last year. Left it in the back of a London taxi (like a dick) and never saw it again. O2 gave me a new phone on the strength of one phone call - they never even wanted to see proof from TFL that the phone wasn't recovered. Was pleasently surprised.

Swings and round abouts, my other halfs phone was stolen from a secure staff room on her first day in a new job (slightly her fault but her previous employ was such that staff could leave personal items in the staff room without the fear of a thieving scrote) such was the level of security of this staff room, there were two entry pin codes, and cctvs watching you wee.

I digress, her bag was riffled through, they pinched the 40 or 50p in her purse in coppers, and her shiny fruit based mobile telephone. She didnt know her own phone number, so it wasnt until she got home she was able to block it. Then the delightful 02 staff informed her her insurance was basically useless, and to get a replacement she would have to shell out 150 quid. She agreed to this thinking it was the only option - then told me, I went online and found several places selling (3gs ipine) for less than the 150. So shafted paying 7 quid amonth insurance, and then shafted on the unit price of a replacement.

Interesting.
Perhaps the message to take from this thread is to claim that you "lost" your phone even if it was stolen.

"You arent covered for theft anywhere unless you are burgled in your own car"

Check that small print again. If your policy's like mine, there'll be a clause excluding theft from an unattended vehicle.

That was my point
YOU have to be burgled in the car, stolen FROM your car has a whole load more small print. And to be fair, their small print does say it has to be out of sight, which is kinda sensible.

By my reading,
you should be covered if someone breaks in to your car or house, but not if your pocket/bag gets dipped, or you misplace your phone.
Caveat emptor!
Is it really worth it? So long as you backup your contents (etc.), you're probably better off just buying a cheap replacement phone.

Pretty much
Any kind of theft from anywhere public seems to be not allowed. Apart from burglary or the aforementioned theft from a car, I cannot fathom where else it could be 'allowed' to be stolen from.
Being mugged on a dark alley is theft in a public place right?

Well, obviously they're not going to cover you for anything that's actually likely to happen
I mean, that would cost money and push up the premiums.
