Shortwave bands in the 1980's
Never mind the Lincolnshire Poacher - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ua94OV9Ter8, woodpecker - www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOMVdOc9UbE, single letter beacons - www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sfAeoaV3Qw. The creepiest thing was the static when it was explained to me by a radio ham that it was light from the big bang, doppler shifted like a speeding ambulance siren coming back through a 14 billion years of space time and reduced in frequency to the shortwave radio bands. Spooky.

Very cool, bit overstated though
Cosmic microwave background radiation (ie big bang echo) only makes up about 1% of the noise you hear as SW static. The rest is solar activity, distant thunderstorms, charged particles whizzing around the sky and occasionally, if you're pointing in the right direction, some noise from Jupiter.

i have not heard the woodpecker for years
mostly because I stopped listening to SW. There was an Australian one too, or so the story was told, directed north.
