This is a question Desperate Times

Stranded in a hotel in an African war zone with no internet access for two weeks, I was forced to resort to desperate measures. Possessing only my passport and the clothes I stood up in; and the warning "You can catch it shaking hands with a vicar out there" ringing in my ears, I had to draw my own porn in order to preserve my sanity.

Alas, it all came out looking like Coronation Street's Audrey Roberts, but, as they say, any port in a storm.

What have you done in times of great desperation?

i was/am
so extravagant with money that my dad used to pay my allowance weekly when i was at university. one month he was away and so paid all 4 weeks in one instalment on a fateful friday.

even way back in the dark ages, or 1997 as we called it then (fuck i'm old), £150 a week didn't really go very far in london. i woke up the next afternoon having spent all but about £30 of my entire month's allowance in the bar. the bank wouldn't extend my overdraft any further and i was already over the limit.

for the rest of the month i lived on slices of economy white bread sprinkled with herbs, salt and anything else i had left in my cupboards from the beginning of the year...

edit: i should point out that £150 a week wasn't hard times, i just had to watch how much clubbing/shopping i did. and if i fucked up i only had to wait a couple of days for more cash. it was only when i spent it all at the very beginning of the month that things got desperate!

I like the fact that £150 a week allowance was hard times

Something very similar...
I feel your pain there, I really do.

Coming to the end of my first year in halls, one of my flatmates and I has so expertly thrown our cash down our throats, we were reduced to living on pasta sandwiches (with no sauce) or dry bread for four weeks.

That kind of stuff is character building!

My family couldn't afford for me to go to further education so I went straight out and got a job to help pay the mortgage. I don't think you realise how lucky you were...

Actually, Firkinfedup,
I worked my entire way through University, with nothing except a means-tested loan which I'm still paying back. And that's the case for most students.

Anyway, it's horses for courses, isn't it - and it wouldn't do if we were all the same...

I always knew you were bloody posh...
When I went through uni this last time I got divorced partway through my second year, and ended up as the third roommate in a small basement apartment.

Wouldn't have been so bad but for Anthony's habit of bringing randome men home with him and leaving used condoms in the shower...

Instead of
Paying me an allowance, my parents just bought me a house to live in for the duration of my studies. Since it's rent free, the rent I charge my flatmates could be considered the 'allowance' I guess...
Between that, eBay, the Government and my actual two days a week job, I make about as much as someone working 9-5, five days a week for a good solid ten hours a week work.

So, long story short, no white herb bread here thank god. Rachael's story and your comments give me scope of how lucky I am to be me and not born into a worse off situation.

University is fantastic.

Wow
Geez...and I thought it was a big deal in college (1995ish) to spend $3 on Sunday to get Taco Bell or a personal-sized pizza.
