My Biggest Disappointment
Often the things we look forward to the most turn out to be a huge let down. As Freddy Woo puts it, "High heels in bed? No fun at all. Porn has a lot to answer for."
Well, Freddy, you are supposed to get someone else to wear them.
What's disappointed you lot?

Marathons
I signed myself up to run the Paris marathon, I spent the winter running through the worst conditions, I cut back the alcohol, I was in great shape and looking to finish it in 3 hours.
And then on a routine sunday morning 20 mile training run 6 weeks before the date I get a pain in my right knee, tried running it off but no luck. Quick trip to the Dr reveals I had ITBS, no running for me for 4 weeks at least :( 6 weeks later I start physio, and I've only just got back into running! I've never been so disappointed as to see my mates go off and run it in good times and I knew I was sat on my arse because even climbing the stairs hurt. To rub salt in, as i started to do gentle jogs to ease back in, I got the same injury on my over-compensating left knee. More physio, more time off and more frustration.
So I've got another marathon lined up for the autumn, being more careful this time though!
26.2 miles since you wondered...

Ouch!
Unlucky. I presume you've done all the good stuff like get your physio to check your gait patterns and get trainers with the right type of insole? And plenty of swimming.
Good luck for next time around anyway!

I midly over-pronate so have the right shoes for it
I stretch more now, I'm just more careful as I'll be susceptable to it.
Is swimming good for it then?
It gives me an excuse to get a massage once a week though! ;)

Swimming is more
a way of doing some non weight bearing exercise. It's also a good form of cross training.
Remember to strengthen along with stretching, and to try and avoid long stretches prior to exercise.
God, I need to stop preaching!

Knees are so utterly rubbish
They are so sodding important and yet so much can go wrong with them.
The sooner I can have bionic limbs the better...
And Moniker, thanks for the advice. I trust you've run a marathon before? Sounds like the vioce of experience

I feel your pain ...
...so to speak. I had to pull out of the Edinburgh last year due to last minute injury. I was gutted. I'd have wept if I wasn't so manly. Fortunately later in the year, a workmate had to pull out of the Loch Ness so I got his place. It was so good I'm going again this year but under my own name this time.
BTW 3 hours eh ? I'm suitably impressed.

Paris seems a good one for getting PB's, guy I was training with did it in 3.27, and without blowing my own trumpet, I am faster, younger and fitter than he. 3 hours was targert, 3.15 would be acceptable.
This'll be my first, so learning as I go along.

Nope!
I hate running and would never voluntarily run for that long!
I'm a trainee physio trying to get into sports medicine, am just interested in stuff like this.

if it makes you feel any better
I ran my first half-marathon with a slight injury. I ended up on crutches for a month with a stress fracture. Turns out I'd actually managed to break my leg around the 8th mile and I kept running on it, fuelled by adrenalin and the desire for a decent time. I think it makes me hardcore but very, very stupid. You've probably saved yourself a lot of damage in the long run.
