Decorating advice I should have taken
As I placed the huge tubs of Homebase own brand paint into my trolly, an old bloke said, "Don't do it son, it'll be like painting with milk"

He was wrong, it was like painting with watered down UHT. Milk might have actually stuck to the brush. The white paint was so piss poor it took 4 coats just to cover an already white ceiling.

On a side note...
does anyone want a big tub of white paint that has sat in a cupboard for 4 years...

If about two thirds of it has evaporated,
it may now be approaching useful.

I've heard this theory before
(or similar) in that the water in the paint separates and forms a clear layer on top which can be poured off. I'll check it tonight.

so this....
we bought vats of Homebase paint when we moved into our place. FOUR COATS before we got an even passable lokking wall.
Next day we took all but the one we opened back and bought Dulux for twice the price.
But it was worth it

I agree that own brand paint is mainly shite and its best to stick to well known makes of paint.

Also never buy non-drip gloss paint or gloss paint that supposedly requires no undercoat. Go out and buy undercoat and a good brand of proper "drippy" paint. The non-drip stuff starts drying before you have had a chance to brush it evenly and you tend to end up with a lot of brush marks. Textured finish anyone?!

Also water based low VOC gloss paint isn't. Water based paint is good for walls, but on wood its pants. If you hate the smell of solvent wait till its a warm day before painting and leave the windows open

My old man used to leave a peeled onion in a bucket of warm water in the room as well.
Worked a treat every time.

In my experience...
Never cheap out on paint. Ever.

Only use for own-brand paint is for a freshly plastered wall / ceiling first coat (*which is always best watered down anyhow), then top notch paint all the way.
