I hate to break this to you, but...if you didn't go to the freaking gym for eleventybillion hours a year, you might have less muscle definition in your legs. Just maybe.

just i would prefer slightly less muscle and slightly more skinny on the calf side of things! but it really isn't the gym... i stopped going to the gym for a good couple of years when i was with/after the horrible bullying ex, and the calves stayed EXACTLY the same. humph.
i hear pilates is good at fining down calf muscles, but i also hear it HURTS.
