Or a second-hand Leica D-Lux 4, which is a spectacularly good camera. If you want something capable but user-friendly, get the Canon PowerShot SX210 IS, which is phenomenally good for a compact. It'll leave you about a ton change, but bear in mind you'll need a bit spare for a decent memory card.

Depending on how long you're going to be away from a computer for, you could well need an 8GB card. You have to consider the resolution of the pictures, the quality of the camera, and how keen a photographer the user is

It's an ugly beast for sure, but it's a better camera than many of the basic DSLRs. Plus you can get reasonably-priced wide angle & flash attachments and suchlike

Anything under £400 for that camera is a fucking bargain, although it's nearly 2 years old it's robust as fuck
