You could probably get a Canon 1000D for that if you don't mind investing in the lensesOr a second-hand Leica D-Lux 4, which is a spectacularly good camera. If you want something capable but user-friendly, get the Canon PowerShot SX210 IS, which is phenomenally good for a compact. It'll leave you about a ton change, but bear in mind you'll need a bit spare for a decent memory card.

That is absolutely not trueDepending on how long you're going to be away from a computer for, you could well need an 8GB card. You have to consider the resolution of the pictures, the quality of the camera, and how keen a photographer the user is

G11 every time for meIt's an ugly beast for sure, but it's a better camera than many of the basic DSLRs. Plus you can get reasonably-priced wide angle & flash attachments and suchlike
EDIT: the G12 must be out soon. Hang fire
