What exactly would they do though

They would put a no fly zone in place
and engage any of their jets/helicopters with their much better missiles from about 10 miles away.

but which country is actually going to fire a missile at a libyan fighter jet? It won't be Italy, since Bellusconi is Gaddafis best mate. And I don't think any of the other countries really has the stomach for a war over something which won't affect them.
