at some point I will get to the bloody 6 nations/world cup though.

New Zealand v. Tonga when Jonah Lomu was at his peak.
It made for a good afternoon, but when play is at the further point away from you, you can't see if someone has been turned over (for example).

surely that kind of problem is true of any game though? Football/rugby pitches are big.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:08, Reply)
With rugby, you can have a full 'pile-on' and the play might be hidden under people for a while.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:11, Reply)
even taking that in to account though, I think I would prefer to watch a game of rugby live than football.
But anyway. How's the jobstuff going?

And I (think) I'm making progress.
How are you plans progressing? Any thoughts beyond your contract? When is it up?
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:20, Reply)
looks overwhelmingly likely that I won't get a PhD but I've three or four applications left to stick in; might as well.
Failing that, I suspect a move to London is on the cards as that's where the most jobs are. But it's not definite, I'll have to wait and see what comes up. I could end up anywhere really.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:24, Reply)
certainly I'd like to give it a go for a bit - Labs mentioned something the other day about if you've reached 40 years old and never lived in London you have no life, but if you've reached 40 years old and still live in London you have no soul. I like that idea. I like that there's always interesting stuff and things to see and that even with cost of living taken in to account the pay is better!
But as I say. I could end up anywhere.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:30, Reply)
it's the nature of what I do; I always knew I'd end up moving around a bit, and most of the cities I could conceivably work in I'd be happy to live in, so...

Spent the evening freezing my arse off at a meeting in some village hall, constantly shuffling around to try and keep warm.

And whilst public transport is great, it isn't free.

which puts me off slightly, but it'd probably be good for me. And yeah rent is expensive but most of the jobs being advertised pay 50% more than I get now, if you include the London weighting.

Rather than somewhere to live.
Where are your other PhD applications being sent?
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:44, Reply)
one in Leeds, possibly one in Newcastle and another in Oxford.

and paying over the odds for accommodation and the general cost of living, would, frankly, make me come like a faulty fire hydrant.

Don't get me wrong, I like London; as a place to visit it's magnificent. But I could no more live there than I could spend the rest of my days on the receiving end of a red hot poker.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:35, Reply)
until I started visiting it a lot more often. Now I think I could probably live there for a bit. Not for ages, but for a bit. It'd be interesting, certainly.

You didn't see Bomber or Oz OD'ing did you?
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:37, Reply)
Did everything that was asked of him. He was one of only three defensive players there out of 30 kids (apparently the focus is more on strikers and midfielders), and there were only two players in the team he plays for selected to go. His was an automatic selection, the other kid's name was selected out of a hat.
30 scouts there today from clubs all around the country. Even if he doesn't get selected he's had a brilliant experience.

Had a late meeting tonight; I'm still in wind down mode, even though I'm utterly fucked.

Couldn't see the appeal myself.

Frankly, I wonder how Monty puts up with it all.
