After many days of beeping I've taken the smoke detector down and I've bought a new one because it's shit.

Did it not just need a new battery?

It did but it was a flimsy cheap detector.
I upgraded. It's for the attic rooms so my guest don't die.

You should get one that's wired to the mains
Then the batteries can't run out and you won't die.

Mine have both
I can only assume this is to allow for power cut timed firey death avoidance

I often think that I should put batteries back in mine and put them back on the ceiling....

The one is the hall is too bloody keen to go off
to the point that when you cook (i.e. not burn) anything it goes off. My daughter now knows to stand underneath it and wave frantically as I wave a tea towel at it until it stops
