Can someone explain why people like him so much?
i honestly know very little about him or his music

I like him a lot
Listen to this song. If you don't like it, it's probably safe to say you're not going to like most of his stuff.

Edit: Mostly he's famous as a songwriter - if you don't like the way he sings, there are hundreds of cover versions out there. For instance, it was him who wrote "All along the watchtower", although he admitted Hendrix's version of it was better than his.

I like Subterranean Homesick Blues and nothing more.
A few years ago they had 'Dylan Night' on BBC2 so I thought I should give him a second chance in case I'd been wrong all these years - nope. 20 minutes of his whiny shitty singing and 'asthmatic on life support' harmonica 'playing' and off it went. Fucking appalling. The Byrds did some decent covers of his stuff as of course did the Almighty Jimi, but as a performer I can honestly say I'd rather watch paint dry.

He actually made a name as a performer before he started writing his own songs
I think the reason he was successful there was that he was a folk singer, and when he was starting out there were very proscribed ways to sing folk songs. It wasn't so much that he was a fantastic performer, it was that he was different.

If I 'performed' whilst straining for a massive shit it would be 'different'*...but it'd still be bollocks.
He was popular because his whiny 'protest' shit struck a chord with the early-mid 60s US college crowd who turned their noses up at electric blues or rock'n'roll performers because they weren't 'authentic'. He was seen as a God for similar reasons by the middle class CND badge-wearing proto-vegetarian student wanker crowd over here. Anyone who thinks Joan pissing Baez is anything other than a tedious, proselytising cunt-face should be beaten in the eyes with a claw hammer.

* not from GG Allin but, you know...

This is merely my opinion, of course.

I think you're 98% right
the only thing you're wrong is liking that song

That'll do for me.
