I find some of it pointless
Art for art's sake annoys me, it doesn't help the stereotyping of art students, and there are some genuinely good ones (edit: ones = artists) out there. You just have to distinguish them from the 'fries with that' art student.

Independent modern art galleries annoy me, where everything you see is on sale for 10 times what you'd expect to pay.

Art with some kind of craftmanship or evocative value is something I can rate.
I'm sure there'll be people who disagree with me because anybody can interpret anything as art and it'll have different values to them.

And, of course, this place is full of argumentative twats.

Now while I don't know who you are
but rest assured, your comment struck me deeply.

thing is right
you shouldn't need to study art to be a good artist, and I suspect that it rather gets in the way, because those who teach art are almost certainly going to be completel shitbags of the highest order.

As someone who is married to an ME type
I hear some choice words about CEs
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 11:12, Reply)
you should CEs talk about architects
my other half is a structural engineer. My bro and his wife are both architects. Makes for interesting family gatherings.

Yeah, my brother in law is a CE too
He keeps asking mr b3th for advice, which frankly just reinforces the prejudice.

I think that if there are those who want to develop their own style
then studying the different forms, shadowing current ones and spending many years in various places/schools would make sense.

I just assign no value to the ones who think they are of the same ilk after pissing a few years away at university, interspersing their factory-produced curriculae with 5-for-1 drinks at 80's night.

you make a good point with the first bit
my comment was more a sweeping generalisation based on the latter half of your post.
