See, I can't tell if you're lying.
Swear it on the Higgins Bison thinggy.

Speaking of the Higgins partcal thinggy....
is it right to say it's the Stem Cell of phsyics?
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:01, Reply)
er, not exactly.
stem cells (or at least embryonic ones) are the "templates" of human cell biology, they can become any cell in the body dependant on the conditions they are exposed to. The Higgs Boson is an elementary particle in the standard model of particle physics, but it's the only one of the standard particles that has never been observed - essentially its existence is invented to fill a hole in particle physics theory.

How do they get away with that? Scientists, I mean.
It's like me saying the sky is bright green and then saying it's unobservable and it is under the right conditions... promise, take my word for it.
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:06, Reply)
it's not "getting away with it" .. it's a matter of how things are publicised
Scientists only hypothesise it exists because it fits the available evidence and theory. The press just can't report anything in a way that accurately reproduces exactly what scientists are saying, because it's got too many ifs, buts and caveats. The press like hyperbole and relevant information.
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:08, Reply)
The press like monosyllabic words,
five word sentences and lots of exclamation points. It's hard to explain anything under those conditions.
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:11, Reply)
True, too
but they also want to know the relevance of the science to the public. Scientists, too often, just tend to care about the actual science and can't explain it in context.
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:14, Reply)
Like all the crap about soap stars is of
relevance to the public?
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:19, Reply)
the public relate to it.
yep, because for some inexplicable reason large swathes of the population are interested. relevance in that sense, rather than importance

Look, I'm not saying I like it - christ, getting my work publicised is the bane of my fucking life - but I do at least understand how it works, unlike some scientists.
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:21, Reply)
The public relate to it for the same reasons that they like Coldplay.
The vast majority of them are at the intellectual level of chimps.
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:23, Reply)
Oh, OK.
You could publicise your work on /OT. We have a learned group of readers who will read it carefully and after thinking about the subject at some depth, make a knob joke out of it.

Go on then.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-12752422

that's on of my recent projects.
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:27, Reply)
are you also manufacturing it for use in gory films?

(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:31, Reply)
Actually, that's not a bad idea
although I suspect the costs would put off most studios.
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:33, Reply)
I feel humbled that at least one person here is doing a useful job.

(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:32, Reply)
occasionally
mostly I just do stuff for shits and giggles, obviously.
(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:34, Reply)
That's gay.

(, Tue 26 Apr 2011, 12:49, Reply)
You want me to swear on something possibly mythical?
Nah, I'm not bullshitting you, he's a bloke. Scout's honour.
