I don't understand why someone would bother studying a subject
that they don't seem to intend to put to any use.

That said, I 'studied' graphic design for three years and made the error of taking the first job that came along rather than be on the dole and ended up having the life sucked out of me for the next 11 years before accidentally falling into something I like doing.
