My dad was chilled as fuck.
My mum would have you by the throat if you so much as said "What?" in a sullen manner.
I behaved just as well for both of them.
I don't think you need violence, but the threat of it is a handy back-up.

the only problem with having it as a threat is that unless you do it as an example once
it's useless.

Not necessarily, but like I say, you don't reeeeally need it.
I knew some people who were threatened with it and it never happened but they behaved when they heard something like "I'll smack your bum if you don't stop that."

I see what you mean, fear is brilliant as a short term motivational tool but long term it's proper crap.

How many times have you been on a train or something
and heard a mother say 'Stop it or I'll smack you' six hundred times? All the kid learns is that the punishment never arrives, so the warning means nothing.
(, Wed 6 Jul 2011, 16:50, Reply)
But with some kids it does, if it comes along with proper discipline anyway, and not used by some tit who can;t control the kid by any means

(, Wed 6 Jul 2011, 16:51, Reply)
I've just seen too many ineffectual parents and the resulting brats
It's another reason why I can never have children. I know I would be far too strict and intolerant.

same, watching my brother raise his two little ones terrifies me. Thank fuck they arrive in the class
toilet trained and with a slight degree of self restraint.
(, Wed 6 Jul 2011, 16:56, Reply)
I thought you got the 'special' kids?
Bennys tend to have very little self-restraint, in my experience.
(, Wed 6 Jul 2011, 17:01, Reply)
That's why they should be tied to trees at all times.

(, Wed 6 Jul 2011, 17:02, Reply)
Nah, I work with them every now and again, they have their own wing at school
today I had adhd as he is a notorious shite hawke on trips and has to have male one on one (or a huge lesbian).
(, Wed 6 Jul 2011, 17:03, Reply)
your school can fly?

(, Wed 6 Jul 2011, 17:10, Reply)
I'd like to be mean about how other people bring up kids
but I suspect I would be considerably worse
