The rankings go Beginners - Novice - Intermediate - Pre-Champ - Amateur. I know that sounds daft but once you win Amateur a few times, you can turn Professional.
Intermediate is the goal because at that level there's no restriction on syllabus so we can do whatever choreography we want.

The dress rules are variable; the major competitions have restrictions below Intermediate, but the smaller local ones will let us do the full tailcoat/slashed-to-the-waist shirt/rhinestone-tastic dresses at Novice level.
This is very exciting for Ms Foxtrot but less so for me. Partly because tailsuits are fucking expensive, and partly because the sight of me in a slashed-to-the-waist shirt would be... unseemly.

All women love men in slashed-to-the-waist-shirts. (I don't know what one is)
