They "had" two of his sons, one was rescued, the other may or may not have been captured at all.But just by saying he had been captured a number of army commanders switched sides so it could have been a tactic.

Partly because NATO stopped Gadaffi from being able to use his military. Mainly because they don't like him.Which smells terribly of playground bullying to me. Poor Gadaffi :(
