I'm fairly sure I've got a copy of Windows 3.1 on disk somewhere.

This may be a generalisation, but all Microsoft products are shit.

Without wanting to be too much of a conservative, the idea of a whole new kind of interface even for desktop doesn't appeal much to me. I like this one, which has been going since the days of the Mac (correct me if i'm wrong), it's very familiar, simple, and intuitive.
Ah well, as long as they keep the Classic option

But the way people use PCs has changed, if you think of the context. Where as before it was a work tool, it's now a social tool. Where as before you need to be sat down at a desk to use them, now you would use them standing up on the tube.
Think of the proccess of getting some software onto your machine....
- Open disk draw, put in CD, close it
- Wait for the autoinstaller (that has to be created by the developer, and therefore, is different from program to program)
- Pick a location of where to install it
- Pick what elements you wish to install
- The installer has to write the files, registry keys, components.
- Determine what hardware you've got; if you can run it.
..... etc....
And that's before you've even used it for the first time. Now you can click on 'store' (or whatever they call it), click 'install', and it'll take care of purchasing/lisancing and installing. Like an iPhone really.
They've borrowed sooooo much from Apple, it's quite flattering.

... It's hard to explain, there are the usual way of using things, but the new way is very touch friendly, things like windows, buttons, menus, the whole lot, has been re-thought of. Plus it's more or less instant on (even on a low-grade ARM processor it went from switched off to being in your 'Tiles' (the equivilent to your desktop, I suppose) in 3 seconds.
There is too much to mention, but check this out: www.youtube.com/watch?v=p92QfWOw88I
Also, development ethos is amazing, a developer could create a service, such as "post to twitter", and that will be usable in every app. Or you could create a "use facebook photos" service and suddenly when browsing for photos to, say, share or upload, your facebook photos would be there.

Plus you can build apps using webtechnologies such as HTML5/Javascript, which means that someone like me, who has never touched desktop development, can suddenly build very rich applications.
I absolutly love the idea of Tiles and am considering a WM7 mobile when my contract is up.
