No, remarkably I worked it out by myself using LOGIC
It occured to me that as I was applying backgrounds from IE, if I opened the picture in IE it might work. And it did. I know this is incredibly basic stuff to most of you, but for me this is the equivalent of the first time cavemen rubbed sticks together cos they were cold.
