My other half got stopped and fined for doing 88mph,and the copper admitted that they don't bother to stop people doing 85 or less

That's because they'd have to have the entire force out stopping almost everybody below the age of 70.
I also have heard anecdotal evidence that says they don't care if you keep it to 85.

Wow. I knew there was some leeway, but 15mph over the limit and they let people go?I am assuming this was on a motorway and not outside a school, at least.
