So in a depressingly popularist move
the Tories are suggesting raising the speed limit to 80mph and have found a quarter of a billion pounds to let councils have weekly bin collections again.
What do people think about that then?

I don't see a problem with either of those two policies.
I'm confused with how bin collections cost so much to the councils though.

How about the fact that the evidence shows that having higher speed limits leeds to greater numbers of road deaths?
And that most councils have pushed the reduction in bin collections as a way of getting people to increase recycling? Personally I think there should be weekly recycling collections, that would be a better use of the money.

The bin men left our bins for two weeks once
they overflowed, stank, and attracted flies and foxes, so this is good news.
80 is fine, cars are faster and safer than they were when the limit was introduced. however maybe it would be pertinent to ensure people had to pass an extra test if they wish to use it. really i'd rather see them HEAVILY penalise middle lane drivers, this would help traffic flow far better.

The laws of physics still apply to new cars though
and the weakest point is always the driver making an error.
So a new car, which is heavier than an old car, has a lot more kinetic energy and is therefore more dangerous when spinning out of control.
(
Bazongaloid, Fri 30 Sep 2011, 14:37,

Well crumple zones for example divert impact force for both the car and whatever it's hitting.
I think that 80mph on motorways is fine. Road deaths are getting too low anyway, lets get it back to 80s levels.

The problem with raising the speed is that most people who currently do 80 on the motorway will now do 90.
I am a bit incensed about speeding. I have been done for 35 in a 30 and have to take a morning off work next week to attend a speed awareness course to keep my license clean. One of my colleagues was pulled over last Sunday evening doing around 120 (dickhead) on the M40. The copper apparently said "these Mini Cooper's are great fun - best not go so fast again though" and let him off!

I think that's the main problem.
If they make it 80, they will have to start fining and pointing people who are caught at 81. And they won't do that. And probably would find they got challenged in court if they tried to prove 81 anyway.

That's because they'd have to have the entire force out

Simple flow dynamics shows us that if a conduit is narrowed

Although think of it like this- how will they police the increased limit, with lowering police numbers and a supposed tightening of legislation regarding speed cameras?
In short, it's a sop to the voters to try and distract them from the current problems, greedy bankers, feral teenagers and Rory.

Bonzodog29 is an unemployed sponge of the worst kind, Fri 30 Sep 2011, 15:54,

The point is, it's not a good way of "giving something back"
it's giving council money so that they can pay landfill operators to accept more rubbish, some of which money which then gets recycled to the treasury through landfill taxes.
The knock on effect of this is that less stuff is recycled since it's being put in a landfill, and the UK ends up 1) getting fined by the EU for not meeting it's recycling objectives and 2)it runs out of landfill even quicker. You probably aren't aware but we only have a few years worth of landfill left at the moment.
The more sensible way would be to use that 250mil to provide more incinerators, anaerobic digestors and to encourage sorting at the level of the house because, no matter what that morbidly obese moron says on the news, technology has not evolved to the stage that a machine can magically take a pile of shit and turn it into neat piles of stuff for recycling, at best what happens is a bunch of immigrants spend their days physically pulling this shit out of big heaps and that is not efficient.
