I wouldn't say Radio One did it, more the youtube video with the hand-drawn animation. They wouldn't have gone to retail without it though, probably, maybe.
I can't think of any examples off-hand, but it bipasses a lot of the production expenses and therefore allows the song/album to go to market without that initial investment, thus it's not so much a risk for anyone.

And hardly anyone makes significant money of actual music sales these days, it's all merchandising and concert ticket sales, even with massive bands like say, Iron Maiden, you might not like them, but they have shifted millions of albums. If they stopped doing tours they wouldn't sell any T-Shirts and they wouldn't make any money.
Not that I reckon they actually need to keep doing it if they didn't want to, but a new band doesn't have that luxury.
