Oh man, I made the biggest fucking mistake of my entire career just now and took our main website down for 3 hours.
This has included a 2 hour call to Holland and a 1 hour call to, well, central london. I made a mistake and it wouldn't supprise me if they let me go after it. Only thing I can say is that I was the one who came up with the fix before anyone else, but I'm so fucking gutted I made the mistake in the first place that I want to fall down into a tiny little hole with a few tablets the size of my.... well, the size of my mistake.

It wouldn't supprise me if I get sacked on monday =(

Is it the first mistake you've made in the job? Are they happy with your performance overall? What was your last appraisal like?
If you've been doing well until now it is highly unlikely they will sack you - even though they make money through the web.

Nobody is perfect & it would cost them money and inconvenience them to have to recruit a replacement.

Act a bit "mea culpa" and you should be fine.

Hi team,

I'm really really sorry about today's fuck up. I'm more than gutted that I made this mistake twice (once locally and once on Live) and it caused us to have 3 or soo hours of down time, especially on a Friday night causing K to have to stay in the office so late, and also for D to have to deal with this while on Holiday (again, on a friday too).

I normally spend about 5 seconds before I click any kind of 'push' / 'pull' buttons, since the last time, and I must have lost concentration this time because I pulled the wrong repo and pushed it all the way to Live. To make sure this doesn't happen again, I'm going to create on my computers sevral copies of HG that only have refference to the right places.

Really sorry for all the hassle it's caused, actually mortifide when I realised what happened. They're no famous acrynims online like 'lol' for 'Sware Out Loud', but that happened quite a few a few times tonight.


Cheers for baring with me tonight and getting the site back up and running the way it should.

As has been said, you owned up to it immediately, you fixed it, and you said sorry. It inconvenienced people, but they've got the weekend to calm down, and a big treat basket in the office on Monday should help, too. i wouldn't worry too much about it now.

Actually, instead of a treat basket, you could make them some special brownies. then they'd definitely forget all about it.

In other news, I've just been asleep since 4, and I've cricked my neck. I'm going to give up in a minute and go to bed. Man, do I know how to spend a Friday night or what?
