In terms of bread and butter policy the SNP are close to the Wet, One Nationist Toryism popular in Scotlandthat existed before Thatcher.
Also, demographics of the voter base as shown in Opinion polls and vote spread.

I think the biggest factor in their favour is that they are not Labour, Tory or Lib Dem.All the three main parties are historically unpopular. The SNP were pretty much a protest vote.
