English/British food is fucking marvellous.
We sell ourselves massively short, here, I think.

I think so, yorkshire puddings on their own.

That doesn't sound like a very nutritious meal.

It also falls into your "selling ourselves short" category
If the best British food you can think of is batter.

Hey!
Battered's alright. Don't be so mean.

He is, however, stodgy and very bad for your health
and as such, should only be had in moderation.
(, Mon 7 Nov 2011, 9:31, Reply)
To be fair, so does the rest of the world.
The perception of us eating bland, badly cooked stodge doesn't seem to want to go away. But I agree, we have some superb cooking in this country. Even something as simple as fish and chips, cooked properly, is divine.

I blame the 70s

I had to agree with Gonz's evaluation of Keith Floyd the other day.
I don't necessarily agree with him all the way on the subject, but the repeated clip from the 70's on Saturday morning didn't inspire me to go off and try to replicate the recipe. When it came out the oven it looked like he'd just shat in a pot and left it on a low heat for 12 hours.

Part of that is the deterioration of the colour of the film.

(, Mon 7 Nov 2011, 9:33, Reply)
Did you see it though?
It was basically scraggy meat, leeks, onions and fucking bird seed. It looked awful.
(, Mon 7 Nov 2011, 9:46, Reply)
I confess I did not.
A friend of mine was very good pals/drinking partners with Floyd when he owned a pub in Ireland. He was fucking hilarious, apparently. Utterly unsurprisingly...

I blame Keith Floyd.
He's such a fucking horrific 'chef', I've never once seen him cook something that I've wanted to try.
(, Mon 7 Nov 2011, 9:44, Reply)
The trouble with a lot of British food is its
based around overcooked meat with overcooked vegetables.
