I believe that ghosts/ hauntings are unknown science. There are three/four different types of 'ghosts' and each type has distinct environmental requirements, therefore it is likely they are explainable with regard to those requirements and are therefore describable, and replicable by science.
Like 'recording' hauntings- stone buildings, usually granite. It's high ly likely that the recording is along the same lines as magnetic tape recordings.
Or something. You catch my drift.

How so? I don't believe that ghosts are the spirits of the dead, once you're dead you're dead. And there are different types of ghosts/ hauntings, which logically can be extended to environmental causes, mental illness, etc. Just because something is unexplained doesn't mean it won't/ can't be explained.

Phenomenon means 'An occurrence, circumstance, or fact that is perceptible by the senses'.
That is the sense I was using.

Theoretical physics postulated black holes way before any were identified, and nobody accused Hawking et al of being credulous nincompoops.
It's not blind belief either- I fully expect these things to be categorically explained in the future. And like I say, I do not believe they are dead people, just that these things haven't been explained by science.
Fucking magnets, how do they work?

And I suspect hawking et al had some evidence to go on and a back ground of research. The thing a bout theories is also that they can be proved of disproved. Beliefs tend to be imune to evidence. This is why god botherers have belifs and not theories.

I am of the view that just as the Elizabethans didn't understand hygiene and electricity, eventually ghosts and things will be explained by science. That is fundamentally not the same as a religious type believing in God/angels/creation etc.

But when you say "I believe in ghosts" the majority of people will not understand this as "I thing the penomena we call gohosts will one day be explained by science." I think most will read it as "I am a credulous knob", hense the reaction.
