It's no coincidence the Vatican is in Rome, seen as the Roman empire became christian.

the fact that it's the seat of the Catholic church
isn't really much to do with the Italians, though. In the whole christianity/catholic split, for long periods Spain, France and even England were more "important" to the Catholic church. I thought it was the Vatican by default since England and France effectively overthrew Catholic rulers?

Seen as Italy wasn't a country until fairly recently you are correct.
Gonz is being facetious though, as am I.
The papal states pimped themselves out to anyone who would defend them, as the defenders of the faith. Hence why the Spanish and French are important Cathiolic countries.

The Vatican is in Rome because the Roman Empire became catholic. That be a FACT.

I think Gonz is being stoned.
Yeah, I fucked up with the holy roman empire, I didn't realise that when they tried to resurrect the whole shebang through the catholic church they called it "empire" again.

The Romans would have killed any Italian catholics on sight, though, which does kind of put a flaw in Gonz'z idea.

How would they have done that? Catholics didn't exist in the Empire before it became Christian.
The Catholic church split from the Orthodox church way after that.

So the Romans be burning and killing normal Christians and to be honest that was somewhat overstated. Romans were quite into religious tolerance.

I meant in the sense that catholics would be a christian sect.
Mostly the Romans weren't mad for Christians. They displayed some tolerance some of the time but then tend to spoil it with massive outbursts of religious genocide.

Until Constantine coverted after he had a dream and the won an important battle
But he wasn't terribly nice as he boiled his wife to death

Hmm, not really and they mostly made examples of folk.
The Romans had a simple solution to religion, worship who you like as long as you acknowledge our gods. So, they did get pissy at the Christians sometimes but mostly left them alone.

The Jews are the ones who really got it in the necks. One rebellion too many for them.

I blame the "people's front of Judea"

mumpsy, I'd have never guessed this area of history was your subject.
Totally owned. My wife will never forgive me, as it clearly demonstrates I wasn't paying attention when she was talking about her education.

I do quite like history, classical stuff be fun.
To an extent cause it's difficult to view things from a certain perspective of that long ago. Easy enough to come out with dry facts but the mindset is so different.
(, Mon 19 Dec 2011, 10:09, Reply)
Of course the problem with this is for many religions to acknowledge other gods is sacreligious

(, Mon 19 Dec 2011, 10:07, Reply)
Exactly why the Jews got such a kicking off the Romans.
