Can't really speak for the later stuff
All I've heard is from the late '60s/ early '70s. Thought their first album was pretty good on the whole* - bits of it reminded me of some of the wonkier stoner/psychedelic stuff from that era you've linked to before. But with a bit of a jazzy element as well - though less forced-sounding than say, Skin Alley.

*and does feature some nice fuzz guitar

Hmmmm
Will look into this. Ta.

Another bit of trivia
Jimmy Page was a fan - apparently early Zeppelin gigs used to include a cover of, or snippets of, Fresh Garbage, off the aforementioned debut album.

(In't Wikipedia great, eh? Facts? You remember them? Remember we used to 'ave to look 'em oop in books? Books? 'member them?)

Loads of people rate them.
EDIT but then loads of people regard Robin Trower's 'Bridge of Sighs' as a Hendrix-influenced masterpiece and I think it's extremely mediocre, if not 'fucking shit'.

A Small Faces reference?
Yeah, just had to look that one up. Someone needs to point out to certain music critics that stealing a few licks from Voodoo Chile does not make a song a Hendrix-influenced masterpiece, it makes it a song with ideas stolen from Hendrix. A fairly uninspiring song at that.

He was in Procul Harum wasn't he?
Procul 'really fucking shit' Harum, as they're known in Chateau Boyce. 'A Salty Dog' is almost passable as an LP but really, PH were toss.

That's probably where I recognise the name from
Ties in with the point below about what you appreciate when you're younger - I can remember loving 'White Shade of Pale' when I was about 14 and found it among my mother's old 45s. Don't think I'd waste another three minutes of my life on it these days...
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:49, Reply)
That is an an especially bent tune.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:51, Reply)
I just can't remember what I used to see in it.
(To redeem my mother's cool points, her collection also included plenty of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and an original 45 of My Generation)

Also sampled on a Pink track

Lose 20 cool points.

You are now on -20 cool points. Sorry to be etc.

*hangs head in shame*
It is the only Spirit track I know (not for that reason). It always used to confuse me when the Pink song came on the radio.
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:37, Reply)
Hey! Hang on....
I could easily afford to lose 20 cool points.
I'm surely still in positive figures?
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:38, Reply)
You and Crow here have the highest music cool point scores on here (bar me, obv).

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:40, Reply)
So you're all on -200
I bet you don't even know the name of the latest N-Dubz track
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:51, Reply)
Ha! It's 'I'll Shank You Bruv'. So nerr.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:52, Reply)
Dammit
you have uncovered my pose as an urban music connossieur
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:57, Reply)
You know what to do.
HINT: It is a two-part action, the first of which may or may not involve your account.

This made literally no sense to me :(

Monty and I are discussing an old band by comparing them to other old bands that we've also heard.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:29, Reply)
'12 Dreams...' is from 1970.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:27, Reply)
So it is.
Well, the fact remains I haven't heard it, so I can't comment...
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:28, Reply)
It was just a bit 'meh', if I recall - but maybe I wasn't old enough to appreciate it though.

(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:31, Reply)
Always a possibility
I didn't really 'get' Tommy when I first heard it. 12, 13 years on it's probably one of my favourite albums*.

*This in no way guarantees that persistently listening to Sardonicus will make it your new favourite LP...
(, Fri 16 Mar 2012, 17:33, Reply)
To this day I'm not a massive fan of Tommy.
That said, I've always considered the medley on the Woodstock LP to be fucking superb.

I like their early singles best.

I seem to remember, about 10 years ago, a bunch of bands knocked out a Who tribute album
I nearly bought it. Then I realised it featured David "ooh-look-I've-changed-my-gay-costume-again" Bowie covering Pictures of Lily and promptly put the CD back on the shelf with what I hope was a suitable amount of British disdain.

One of my favourite singles, as well. As if the wonky-eyed cunt hadn't shat over British pop music quite enough already.
