It's not a competition about who gets the most time. Soldiers, mostly, become soldiers and know what they are getting into. Gay people do not choose to be thrown into a scenario where they may be attacked or killed just for being who they are.

both world wars had conscription, so not a lot of choice there either.
Maybe it's just where I work that pushes it, others as you say may not be so aware.
