Alright dozzle.
Listening to some folk this evening, courtesy of the lovely Toni Arthur of Play School fame.

Cool
Folk's not really my thing. Where would you recommend I start?
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 21:49, Reply)
Alasdair Roberts would probably suit you.
Scottish, plus he's the only other person ever to have been signed to Palace Records.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 21:52, Reply)
Interesting.
I quite like Malcolm Middleton's solo stuff, but that's hardly really folk, is it?
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 21:56, Reply)
I'm all about the traditional stuff
Rather than singer-songwriters writing original material in a folk style.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 21:59, Reply)
I know what you mean.
I'm not keen on genre tourism.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:04, Reply)
That said, there is some great psych folk stuff that I love.
But I consider most of that more in the psych genre than folk.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:14, Reply)
Kate Middleton's rear stuff

Been reading a history of Harvest today
EMI's imprint for bands they didn't think would sell. Deep Purples first three were on Harvest....
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 21:56, Reply)
They brought it back IIRC.
Just checked- Dark Star were on Harvest. I quite liked them at the time.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 21:57, Reply)
They kept the Harvest idea for a while
They tried to get Sex Pistols onto Harvest but McLaren wouldn't have it.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 21:59, Reply)
Dark Star was 1999 or so.

(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:00, Reply)
Must have carried on.
I've also learned something today. A&M records - don't look it up - what does the A stand for?
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:05, Reply)
Ass?

(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:07, Reply)
Alpert - as in Tijuana Taxi
He must have been worth a few bob when you think of all the stuff on A&M.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:11, Reply)
I'm pretty sure Harvest was mothballed but brought back for Dark Star.

(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:07, Reply)
Alpert

(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:08, Reply)
Well done
See thoughts viz wealth etc above.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:12, Reply)
i got all excited for a moment thinking
you meant that film from the 70s. I liked that film, it had a beachball as an alien and yet still managed to be quite dark.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:08, Reply)
Band formed by the remnants of Levitation.
They were alright, had potential.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:10, Reply)
Terry Bickers' band after House of Love?

(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:12, Reply)
Yes
House of Love, then Levitation, then Bickers went mental and the others formed Dark Star.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:12, Reply)
House of Love were good
Never understood why they weren't better.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:15, Reply)
I only know Shine On

(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:16, Reply)
I'd bung a Youtube link on to "I Don't Know Why I Love You"
But every time I put a link on here some cunt hacks into my history.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:18, Reply)
A combination of internal politics,
Chadwick being about 40 when they started and Bickers being nuts.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:19, Reply)
Fair enough
I like what I've heard.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:21, Reply)
Have you read My Magpie Eyes Are Hungry for the Prize - The Creation Records Story?
There's loads about the House of Love in that.
It's a very good read (well, up until the bit where they become Oasis' label)
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:25, Reply)
No, but I will
Always grateful for a heads up, and I always recommend Ian McLaghan's "All the rage" in return.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:29, Reply)
The Small Faces keyboard player?
I'll look out for it, ta.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:32, Reply)
Yes - and with Stones, latterly Billy Bragg
The best bit is 1974 - 1976. He doesn't remember any of it at all!
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:35, Reply)
You might like it too, Dozer.
Primal Scream feature pretty heavily throughout and there's some good MBV stuff too.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:36, Reply)
I just want 70s sci fi now, though

(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:12, Reply)

(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 22:18, Reply)
There was loads of great stuff on Harvest
Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers, Roy Harper, etc.
(, Wed 4 Jul 2012, 21:58, Reply)
Good label
I only really knew it for Purple but there's a lot of good bands in the book.
